Truth, No 23, November 15, 2010
This volume of Haqiqat No 23, contains important news from Afghan print media that were released during past two weeks. It includes 27 news about the process of vote counting by IEC and investigation of reports and complaints of fraud by Election Complaints Commission (ECC). There are 29 news, about the process of negotiation with the Taliban and anti-government forces and 8 news about corruption. Unfortuantely, the question of transitional justice was not debated in the Afghan media during this period.
Election Transparency: The news published in Afghan print media about the election transparency in the country includes: removal of the names of some candidates from the winners list, invalidation of the votes of some polling stations, identification of absentee votes by the IEC, complaints about the involvement of almost 1 thousand IEC workers in the electoral frauds, the problems raised between the attorney general’s office and the authorities in IEC about the process of assessing the electoral complaints, pressure by the President on IEC to bring changes in the list of candidates and finally a recorded audio tape of a government official talking with someone in the IEC which leaked to media.
Peace and talks with the Taliban: The Afghan print media have published news about the process of negotiation with the Taliban which include: insistence by Taliban on their preconditions in negotiation with the Afghan government, the anti-government forces join the peace process in different provinces of the country, government’s optimism in the development of the peace and negotiation process, the Maldiev peace meeting and rejection of Hezb e Islami’s presence in that meeting, rejection of Saudi Arabia to play the role of mediator between government of Afghanistan and the anti-government forces and the foreign authorities view point on the process of negotiation with the Taliban calling it less effective.
Corruption: Afghan government’s response to reject the report by Transparency International about corruption in Afghanistan, investigation of alleged corruption and involvement of 8 former ministers, sending the corruption case of Mohammad Amin Farhang to the court and some other analysis about corruption in the Afghanistan are the news published in Afghan print media about corruption and included in this issue.
In the articles and interview section Ms. Sara Sorkhabi’s interview is published who is a member of Upper House and a member of High Council of Peace. In this interview Ms. Sorkhabi talks about the activities of the High Council of Peace and the process of negotiation with the Taliban.
