The 20th issue of the TRUTH, or Haqiqat, biweekly newsletter is being published as the parliamentary elections and issues surrounding the process have become central to media debates in the county. 37 out of the 55 articles included in this issue are on the elections transparency, indicating the significance of the issue in the post-election days. This volume also includes 10 articles that discusses the reconciliation efforts for cutting peace deal with the armed anti-government groups 6 on widespread corruption and 2 on transitional justice.
Elections transparency: As voting of the 18-September elections ended, reports of frauds and various irregularities of the process hit the headlines of the print media in the country. Distribution of counterfeit voter cards, low-quality of the inks, involvement of the government officials and the powerful figures in the massive frauds in support of their favorite candidates, ballot-box stuffing by a number of the candidates, non-transparent process of ballot-counting and transferring the ballot boxes have been reported as the cases of frauds and irregularities in the parliamentary elections. So far g over 3000 electoral complaints are filed at the Electoral Complaints Commission (ECC) from across the country.
Reconciliation with armed anti-government groups: Formation of the High Peace Council and unveiling of its composition have been the most significant development in the reconciliation talks with the insurgent groups. The council includes jihadi leaders, influential figures figures, former Taliban officials, government officials and 8 members representing women. Absence of the civil society and dominant presence of the long anti-Taliban Jihadi leaders in composition of the High Peace Council have raised concerns over failure of the peace process and the task of the council itself.
Corruption: As the government of Afghanistan pursues the anti-corruption efforts and the challenges remain unabated, the print media of Afghanistan have kept debating on the challenges ahead of the process. Recently, the Attorney General of Afghanistan once again emphasized on pursuing the corruption cases of the senior government officials.
Transitional justice: This section includes two articles, stressing on prosecution of the war criminals and bringing them to justice.
